A Busy Life - We All Have One

Has anyone else had the observation lately that we're all just stupidly busy all of the time? Regardless of who you speak to, as soon as you ask a partner, friend, colleague or family member,  'hey, how's things?', chances are you'll always get met with some iteration of  'yeah good, I'm just sooooo busy'. I'm not even excluding myself from this. I hear myself say it every time my mum asks, but it's just getting silly now.

There's a lot to be said at the moment for the 'busy status'. We wear it like a badge of honour, as anything less than busy - even worse, manageable, is just too 'everyman'. By stressing how busy we are it's almost like we're after acclamation to justify what we've been up to. We can't help but labour the points about how busy we are, how much time we spend working extra hours, how we manage to keep all these plates spinning, searching for that metaphorical pat on the back. The truth is, I think its time to face facts and just call it what it is - life!

I don't know if it's a generational thing, the fact that social media has given our bemoaning a global audience, or if we really are doing more than previous generations, but whichever way you slice it, the truth is, really we're all busy, because busy is just what life is. And yes, I get there are always exceptions to the rule, I'm not talking about those who actively choose not be busy, I'm talking about those of us who do.

Because ultimately, it is a choice right? We are all sane people who know what we're capable of achieving. Yes some may take on more than others at a particular time, but really isn't that just part of the swings and roundabouts of it? If it wasn't sustainable we wouldn't brag about it, we'd sink! We've all got to breaking point when there is no choice but to ask for help, but the truth is, until we get to that point, we will achieve it. We'll usually suck it up, get the job(s) done and then reward ourselves for doing something above and beyond, because you have to earn it in order to enjoy it, right? If there is no blood, sweat and tears, then there is no satisfaction. We thrive off the busy, if we didn't, we wouldn't put the pressure on ourselves to be super human!

So, let's group us all together, we know we're all busy, with work, friends, family, social life, exercise, etc, to various degrees. However, say half of those things are a choice, do we really have the right to complain about it?

You may be working too hard right now, but ask yourself; do you enjoy it? Do you get a kick out of it? Or would you rather you were sat twiddling your thumbs for most of the day? Chances are probably not, we look for the drama and chaos of it all so we can fix it.

Ultimately it's your life and you need to make the decisions that mean you'll look back on fond memories one day, after all, isn't that one of the reasons you're so busy cramming so much into each day.

So, let's all be a little less 'woe is me' and a little more 'yep there's a lot going on, but I choose it' shall we? After all - if we weren't busy all the time, we wouldn't be able to justify those holidays we 'most certainly need'. So chin up chicken - it's not nearly as bad as you think! You just need to stop thinking you're in the boat all on your own, accept that life it what you make it and you've chosen this, so dig deep, achieve what you set out to and smash it!
